J7 Fire Ltd technical guidance

What Happens After a Fire Risk Assessment?

The report begins the management phase: findings must be understood, assigned, controlled, evidenced and reviewed rather than filed away.

Confirm what the report is saying

Review the premises and scope, people at risk, significant findings, priorities, limitations and recommendations. Clarify any matter that is unclear before commissioning work. A recommendation for further information or specialist investigation is not the same as a confirmed design solution.

Stabilise urgent risk first

Where a finding identifies an immediate or serious concern, consider interim precautions and access or operational controls while the permanent response is arranged. The appropriate measure depends on the premises and should not be improvised from generic website advice.

Turn recommendations into an owned plan

  • Record each action with a named owner and target date.
  • Separate management action, maintenance, physical work, information gathering and specialist advice.
  • Identify dependencies, such as a survey or design decision required before remedial work.
  • Retain quotations, instructions, certificates, photographs and completion records.
  • Escalate delay, access problems or changed risk rather than silently extending a target.
  • Tell relevant dutyholders where an action affects their areas or arrangements.

Check completion, not just expenditure

An invoice does not prove that the risk has been resolved. Verify that the accepted work matches the recommendation or revised design, that certification and schedules are complete, and that remaining defects or limitations are recorded. Update policies, plans, training and maintenance where the change affects them.

Review the assessment

Record progress against the action plan and review the assessment at the advised point or earlier after significant change, incident, deterioration or evidence that the existing conclusions are no longer valid. A competent review may confirm the position, revise particular findings or identify the need for a new assessment.
